Check out this article on toxic friendships. (Idea for topic lifted from Afrobella.) It lists four types of toxic friendships. As I read this, I did two things: 1) Think of people past or present who fit one (or all four!) descriptions and 2) Check myself to be sure I am not toxic to others. Here are the 4 types and the telltale signs of each:
The Self-Absorbed Friend
She (1) always talks about herself; (2) is never on time to meet you and forgets things that are important to you (3) breaks promises whenever they are inconvenient to you (3) becomes very nice only when she needs a favor.
The Competitive Friend
1) She invites herself to your events, but whenever she has something to attend, she doesn't invite you; (2) Once you express an interest in something, she also likes it. Show her a skirt in a magazine that you love -- she'll be wearing it the next day. (3) She'll break plans with you at the last minute to hang out with someone else.
The Needy Friend
She (1) doesn't have many friends besides you, [and you just met her]; (2) is very quick to become your best friend; (3) calls you all the time when you're not together; (3) never does anything along; (4) feels stalkerish

The Bitter Friend
She (1) loves to gossip about other people -- especially their troubles; (2) can never seem to keep your secrets and "accidentally" spills them; (3) criticizes you a lot -- nothing you do or say is ever good enough; (4) oftentimes pessimistic.

For me, The Bitter Friend, is the kind I just can't handle. She will take all your energy and put a cloud on your otherwise sunny life. It feels guilty sometimes to end a friendship, but it's part of growing up and taking control of your life and your happiness. That goes for any poisonous relationship in your life. No time for fake ones. Just sip some Cristal with the real ones.
Also, for those who care: I missed posting yesterday due to technical issues. My home network connection wouldn't connect. I think I was sabotaged!!
