Noticeably absent, however, from the Oscar nominee list is color. Howard is the only non-white actor nominated. Forget black, I was searching for any minority. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I saw no other.
Even after Jamie's well-deserved win last year for Ray, and that one year when they couldn't stop giving black folks Oscars, even made up an Oscar for Sidney Poitier, it's business as usual for the Academy. The previous inclusion of black actors was unusual and apparently will not be the new standard. And that's not totally the Academy's fault. It's also due to the lack of roles featuring black actors. Yes, there was also Crash, but that was about black and white racial dynamics, so it had to have black people. But I struggle to name another. It's the same old lament: We just do not have a real presence in Hollywood. And that's a real shame.
I don't have a soapbox or anything today, and I'm not in the mood to preach about the wrongs of Hollywood. It's just that I saw the nominations and felt disheartened. It's 2006 -- and not much has changed.
